About this deal

He’s well matched with Ffion who is such a brilliant character, she’s funny, a motor mouth, great at her job and rather impossible to both live with and without. What made this book a standout was the setting--the majority of the novel takes place in the Welsh mountains, and Mackintosh transported me to Wales.

The book had many twists and turns and even though it dragged a little bit in some parts I still enjoyed it on the whole.Ffion is struggling with her emotions and a new rescue dog named Dave, who is THE BEST; he brings some much-needed humor into the plot. Seven reality show contestants are stranded in the Welsh mountains, and the name of the game is to expose their secrets. While there are many perspectives, all are distinct and easy to track, and each plays a pivotal role in the plot. Tension comes from several quarters and I like how several chapters have suspenseful endings which keeps you reading on.

Enter Detective Ffion Morgan, a local who is well known in the town but who is also known to be difficult to work with amongst her colleagues.I found the main character a little bit difficult to engage with, but this is the second book in a series. If one contestant guesses right the others secrets they are eliminated, the aim of the game is to make sure one person does not their ‘secret revealed’.

I felt the author really had thought through how it all should play out, writing a plot that was watertight and where events made perfect sense when you were given the last puzzle piece. Het voorgaande deel vond ik ook oké, maar die viel mij ook een klein beetje tegen en helaas is dat met dit tweede deel precies zo. I thoroughly enjoyed the well-constructed, twisty murder mystery and the structure that goes back and forth to reveal the secrets and motives each contestant carries and acts upon. There is a bit of a social commentary on the nature of reality shows and the lengths people will go to be famous.I also enjoyed occasional chapters from other character viewpoints which really helps to show just how fake these sorts of programmes are. The seven contestants think all they have to do is remain in the camp at the bottom of the Pen y Ddraig mountain for the allotted time without being voted out by the public. If another player can guess the truth, they won't only be eliminated but they will be exposed live on air.

Each contestant has their own motives for getting involved with the show, mainly the money, fame or more and at what cost when they find out the potential dread that follows that their biggest secret may be about to be revealed. Many thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for sharing this amazing book's digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts. Their unresolved feelings lead them to act like stubborn, immature children who make false assumptions about each other, while George is caught in the middle of their hot-cold war. Mix this in with her ex husband and ex lover both working the case this story becomes tense with emotions. I’m going to remain positive and be adamant that it was my mood’s fault that I couldn’t get into this one very well.I especially liked Georgina, whose cold, unemotional demeanour conceals a dreadful secret but also a great sense of humour. Her will-they-won't-they-well-they-already-did-but-will-they-again relationship with English DS Leo Brady is also very believable and it's interesting to see how it plays out in the context of the investigation. Many thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for providing me with an advance copy of this book to review. Several of them make an appearance, and Caleb (Seren's boyfriend) and Ceri (the postwoman) play important roles, but overall the story is much more focused on the reality show contestants and crew and their filming location outside of town. The first book in the series was ok in as much as I wanted to read to the end but only because I was mildly intrigued to see what would happen.
