About this deal

Waris Dirie (the name means desert flower) lives a double life – by day she is a famous model and UN spokeswoman on women’s rights in Africa, at night she dreams of her native Somalia. A somewhat interesting storyline and a disturbing issue (FGM) that must be addressed, but just poorly written all round. After such a long time in the western world, Waris's arrival in her homeland, most of all her reunion with her mother and also the dispute with her former life, will be a personal challenge for her.

This is an autobiography of a very resilient and head-strong Somali woman who up and left her desert nomadic clan. Faced at 12 with the prospect of marriage to a 60-year-old man she didn't know, she broke all the rules and ran away, surviving a traumatic trek across the desert to end up in London, as a maid to the Somalian Ambassador. The most compelling portions of Dirie's story are her graphic portrayals of the practice of female genital mutilation and the impact it has on women who long to control their bodies and their lives. Her reflections on special moments in her life as a nomad and as a supermodel were honest and often humorous.

I found this book in “full flight”; the author is on the move constantly, making the book suffer from a lack of contemplation. More recently she's become an international UN ambassador on the issue of FGM after sharing her personal story with the magazine Marie Claire and on 20/20.

Moving with relatives to London, she worked for a while at a McDonald's and was discovered by chance by fashion photographer Terence Donovan. Desert Children” is in many ways a shocking book but it is also a book full of strength and hope for millions of women worldwide. Joining the current rage for model memoirs is Dirie, a native of Somalia, who has for more than a decade stalked the world's catwalks and appeared in numerous glossy magazines.

She tells the story of other women she had known that have suffered and in some cases had died because of FGM.
