About this deal

Use Alaitoc Blue to highlight the blue armor. Apply thin lines along the edges and corners of the armor plates. This makes the blue parts stand out.

In our How to Paint Everything series, we take a look at different armies of the Warhammer universe, examine their history and heraldry, and look at several different methods for painting them. With the recent release of the Indomitus boxed set, we’re looking at the two factions involved and how to approach painting them. Today, we’re looking at the new Space Marines! A ‘Patrol’ detachment is fine for the smaller Combat Patrol game type, but if you’re going up to Strike Force or Onslaught matches, you’ll probably want to build your list on one or more Battalion detachments instead – or even the mighty Brigade, if you’ve chosen a troops-heavy ‘horde’ type army like the Astra Militarum. The only real difference is the min-max numbers for units per category. In Warhammer 40k 10th edition Detachmentsprovide your force with several bonuses: an army-wide special rule, a set of 40k Stratagems, and ‘enhancements’ you can use to upgrade specific models or units in you forcer. Your wholearmy is considered to be part of this Detachment – you can’t build a force containing more than one Detachment.

Primaris Apothecary ( Helix Adept • Apothecary Biologis) • Primaris Librarian • Vanguard Librarian • Primaris Chaplain ( Judiciar) • Primaris Techmarine Purity seals in Waagh Flesh, Warboss Green, and Skarsnik Green on the wax, with the parchment being Rakarth Flesh and then Ushabti Bone Captain • Lieutenant • Chapter Ancient • Bladeguard Ancient • Company Ancient • Chapter Champion • Company ChampionThe robes are painted the same way as the red fists, and for this first Veteran I also added some heraldry to his badge in the quite simple form of a red stripe in the same colours and a skull from the Imperial Knights transfer sheet (the tiny Adeptus Titanicus version!) AT transfers are a good source for heraldry – Knights have a great variety of badges and a lot of the AT houses are unusual for 40k, so you can steal their iconography quite freely. I did the same for the other two Veterans. The shields are a fun place to play around with different things – I particularly like the Veteran with a night-sky kind of heraldry with a star at the top, and then the symbol of House Makabius re-purposed as his personal crest. Finally, the shields were done by basecoating the inner section with Caliban Green followed by a heavy stipple of Warpstone. Reaper Jade Green was then lightly stippled, randomly to create clusters of color like you get in the gemstone. Finally the white veins were done with thinned down Splintered Bone. Scale75 Necro Gold frames the shield (and is what I used for all the rest of the gold. Fortifications have had their ups and downs through successive editions of 40k, but have never really played a starring role in the game – whether it be the Star Wars-y floating, shielded platforms of the Tau or the suitably ridiculous, vehicle-repairing Mekboy Workshop that the Orks sometimes bring to battle. Still, maybe that’ll change with the Space Marines’ new Hammerfall Bunker. We’ll see.

This is as far as I’ve gotten with the box. Next up from me is most likely going to be the bikes, which I’m extremely excited for as they’ll bring a nice bit of mobility into my army. At this point I’m not expecting any of the remaining models to be substantially different to what I’ve already painted up; the Bladeguard are the most complicated units remaining and I’ll be approaching them very similarly to how I painted up my Captain and Lieutenant. Raf’s Method I feel like they're pretty overpriced unless you max the squad. Don't forget, a squad of ten, 25 points per dude. Woof. A squad of twenty, now you're at 20 points per dude. That's way more reasonable but still high enough that most people don't want to bother with them, and forgeworld is strongly rumored to be dropping their cost. A squad of 15 is still 22.5 points per dude. Despite our best efforts to split everything, Liam and I did end up with a bit of overlap as there are some things in here that are just too cool not to paint. Liam hopped in and painted up a unit of Eradicators, and I painted up the Judiciar as soon as I’d finished my main commitment. Silent angry dude with a big sword is just too cool not to paint. There areno unifying traits across these, as they each serve a very specific purpose. For example, if you want to bring some stationary armed buildings as part of your army, they’ll need to be in the Fortification Network detachment; mighty war engines such as Imperial Knights can onlybe deployed ina Super-Heavy detachment, and so on.It’s worth noting that Combat Patrol format specifically requires you to take the ‘Patrol’ detachment as your sole choice. However, Imperial Knights & Chaos Knights can only go in Super-Heavy detachments. They can still take part in a Combat Patrol according to a foot-note in this article, however.

The new Storm Speeder looks like it’s the Primaris Replacement for the Land Speeder – it’s even got the ‘Speeder’ name, too! While it did add the third crew member, the resemblance is clear. The Storm Speeder is the descendant of the Land Speeder. Dreadnought: Redemptor Dreadnought To make the metal parts shine, use Stormhost Silver. Highlight the edges and corners of these areas with thin lines. This gives a metallic gleam to the bike and bolt pistol. Using a medium-sized brush, paint the main armor of the Outriders with Kantor Blue. Make sure to leave the shoulder pads and the chest eagle for now. This is our base color for the blue parts.I think if you're going to invest in upgrading the guns, you probably need a very specific role in mind for them and a Rite you can take advantage of to justify the cost. Hellblaster Squad • Eradicator Squad • Aggressor Squad • Eliminator Squad • Suppressor Squad • Desolation Squad • Infernus Squad • Firestrike Servo-turret • Hammerfall Bunker Next is the radically streamlined armylist construction rules. All previous edition lists of specialized Detachments have been replaced with the following list of army construction rules for 10th Edition. Dreadnought ( Castraferrum Dreadnought • Siege Dreadnought • Hellfire Dreadnought • Ironclad Dreadnought • Venerable Dreadnought • Mortis Dreadnought • Chaplain Dreadnought • Librarian Dreadnought • Furioso Dreadnought • Death Company Dreadnought • Redemptor Dreadnought ( Brutalis Dreadnought • Ballistus Dreadnought) • Wulfen Dreadnought • Doomglaive Dreadnought) • Nemesis Dreadknight • Invictor Tactical Warsuit If the Devastator Doctrine was active for your army during the previous battle round, you can change it so that the Tactical Doctrine is now active.
