Tobacco (Lat. Nicotiana) is a genus of plants of the solanaceous family (Lat. Solanaceae). The "nose" from the bottle seemed very nice, somewhat less bracing than the aftershave. 3-4 sprays and I am off to start my day. 30 minutes later and I can't even detect the faintest iota of scent. NADA! I re-apply about 6 more sprays. Within the hour ALL TRACES have disappeared. WTF??? I am really pissed. This was a disgrace and unless I happened upon a bad bottle (what are the chances of that?), Maurer & Wirtz have destroyed a real icon. Among synthetic tobacco scent shaping odorants, we find compounds of very different structure: many synthetic cariotenoids have a tobacco note, with veltonal, a Bedoukian product, being one of the brightest examples of that: an intense violet-ionone odorant with a distinctive tobacco tone and an interesting raspberry-pomegranate fruity accord.

Virginia varieties are the ones most often used to produce the absolute, more rarely people use Burley, the so-called Oriental (Turkish) and Latakia varieties (grown in Syria and Cyprus; upon primary drying, this variety of tobacco is then fire-cured; looking ahead, let me just say that Christopher Sheldrake attempted to reproduce the aroma of that variety of tobacco in his Fumerie Turque, which was created under the strict guidance of Serge Lutens).
