For ferrous metal, treat rust, remove any loose or flaking coatings and sand smooth - in these circumstances, we recommend 2 coats of Frenchic Finishing Coat as a base for the paint. If your door is exposed to the elements, and not enclosed in a porch, then you will need a suitable durable and weatherproof paint. For ease of application and speed, a self-priming paint is perfect. Many paints require a primer, which means buying extra products as well as adding time to the project. Self-priming paints – like the entire Frenchic range – cuts out that hassle and expense. What about colour? Ensure surfaces are in suitable condition for painting and clean, dry, free from wax, grease of penetrating substances and in sound condition. If previously painted, remove loose or flaking paint. Fill any holes/imperfections with a suitable filler. Surface preparation required in addition to the above – clean with Frenchic Sugar Soap, rinse and dry thoroughly. Hand-sand sufficiently to abrade the surface. Wipe off any dust, paint away! For a great demonstration, see our video.

Before you start painting, ensure you follow these key preparation steps to achieve the best end result:

How to Paint Wooden Garage Doors

A 750ml tin will provide a single coat of up to 12.5m 2. For a durable finish, a minimum of 2 coats is required, so your 750ml tin should provide full coverage for just over 6m 2 on non-porous surfaces like laminate or metal. Limited Edition 500ml tins will provide a single coat of up to 8. 5m 2 .

Start early in the morning to give the door maximum drying time before you have to replace the door furniture. This is the most laborious, time-consuming part of painting a front door, but do not be tempted to skip it! I’m not so delighted with the finish though. The first coat went on OK but then it went all lumpy and bobbly: imagine dipping gloss paint into cotton wool, and dragging it around, and you’ll get an image of how bad the finish was. I fully accept that this may have been user error, but given how difficult I found this paint to work with, I can’t recommend it. Our uPVC door with one coat of Zinsser All Coat Exterior Satin paint looks fine. After two coats, it’s gone horribly lumpy. It looks a bit like wood grain. How I Solved the Door Paint Problem Put down little dishes of bicarbonate of soda to help absorb the paint smell. A few halved onions also do the same. I did both and I think it really helped the smell to go. Breathable, chalk and mineral paint formulated for walls. Also suitable for internal woodwork, powder coated radiators, wall tiles (we recommend avoiding very wet areas like shower/bath surrounds). Here is some useful information about painting tiles. Also wood, concrete and most laminate floors with correct application – please note maintenance may be required in these situations.Fail to prepare? Prepare to fail. Preparing the surface of your door is just as important as the painting stage itself. With proper preparation, you’ll find it easier to get a smooth, long-lasting finish.

Always ensure you have enough paint for your whole project. When more than 1 tin of the same colour is needed, it is good practice to ensure batch numbers are identical or to intermix batches prior to commencing painting.Recommended surface preparation in addition to the above – clean with Frenchic Sugar Soap, rinse, dry, hand-sand sufficiently to abrade the surface and/or to smooth any protrusions after filling. Wipe off any dust, paint away! Reseal tin after use. Clean up any spills immediately with water. Wash brushes/rollers in warm, soapy water. A 2.5l tin will provide a coat of up to 35m 2. For a durable finish, 2 coats are required, so your 2.5l tin should provide full coverage for approximately 17.5m 2 on non-porous surfaces. Thinner application may affect durability. Porous surfaces will affect the rate of coverage and require additional coats.
